Bringing about Democratic Socialism for the World
The challenge as I see it, is to get one or a few countries to push a policy through United Nations on a liveable guaranteed income for all people of the world. Initially, it could be a statement of recommendation with various dates to pursue levels of attainment.
There would be a necessity to establish funding for such a proposal. I welcome your suggestions on what would be the best strategy for that. I would suggest that while wealthier countries (some of which are already working towards this goal in their country) could fund it through government taxation system, such a strategy would be too difficult in poorer nations, where governments often suffer from lack of funds & are also more affected by corruption.
There has been recent calls for the big corporations and the 1% to pay their fair share of taxes based genuinely on their income, rather than sneaking it into tax free havens.
Interestingly, some pro capitalist individuals support such proposals as they realise that increasing people’s incomes stimulates an economy.
If people all over the world had a guaranteed income, then the goal is that they would have sufficient funds for all their basic needs: Healthcare, medicine, basic food, clean water, education, basic clothing & housing.
Two alternatives could be that such basic needs are all provided through a UN type system either as a payment or through actual supply of these resources.
While such a system could cater to basic needs, ultimately the function of an economic system based on profit where supply of people’s basic needs is suppressed in order to accrue more wealth, needs to change. The stages that this change occurs is for all people of the world to decide. There is an ability for these issues to be transitioned.
Such discussions to ensure basic needs of all humans are met, needs to be linked to new means of communication across the world. One person, one vote to decide how wealth distribution is to occur in the world. Given that most people in the world are poor, if democracy is truly occurring across the world through such goals & discussions, there will be I strongly believe, a shift to some form of socialism.
I also believe that all people wish to enjoy freedoms & democratic processes, where everyone has a voice & is heard. I suspect that most people favour some freedom of economic activity to achieve human full potential. However, clearly such an aspect must be balanced with providing for all being priority #1. I think most people wish to maintain some private ownership, and even where changes are to occur, transitions can be planned to occur over time. But a system based on greed, where a few live with so much accumulation & the majority live in deprivation, needs to be ended.
